The Seven Sacrements
The Catechism of the Catholic Church lists the
sacraments as follows: "The whole liturgical life of the Church revolves around the Eucharistic sacrifice and the
sacraments. There are seven sacraments in the Church”:
Sacraments of
Christian Initiation 1) Baptism - the rite of
admission into the Christian Church generally (usually with water).
2) Confirmation -a rite of initiation in Christian churches, normally carried
out through anointing and/or the laying on of hands and prayer for the purpose of bestowing the Gift of
the Holy Spirit.
3) Eucharist - in remembrance of Christ as when he gave his disciples bread,
saying, "This is my body", and gave them the cup, saying, "This is my blood".
Sacraments of
Healing 4) Penance - repentance of sins.
5) Anointing of the Sick – the application of holy ‘oils’ to cleanse a sick
person.
Sacraments at the
Service of Communion 6) Holy Orders - the sacrament
by which a man is made a bishop, a priest, or a deacon, and thus dedicated to be an image of Christ.
7) Matrimony - establishes between the spouses a permanent and exclusive bond,
sealed by God.
