Disciples & Disciplines
A Zen master used to say: "There are three kinds of
disciples":
1. Those who impart Zen to others.
2. Those who maintain the temples and shrines.
3. Those that carry the rice bags and maintain the clothes.
A Zen student expressed the same idea after studying under a
strict and severe teacher who even beat him. Other students would not stand for that kind of teaching and
quit.
1. A poor disciple utilizes a teacher's influence.
2. A fair disciple admires a teacher's kindness.
3. A good disciple grows strong under a teacher's discipline.
